What is Ripple?

Ripple (XRP) is unique as it serves both as a digital payment protocol and a cryptocurrency. Launched in 2012, it is designed to facilitate fast and low-cost international payments. Ripple’s technology is used by banks and payment providers to improve cross-border transactions, functioning much like the SWIFT system but with significantly faster processing times. Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies that use mining to validate transactions, Ripple employs a consensus mechanism, which makes it more efficient and environmentally friendly. It is widely adopted by major financial institutions, including Santander and American Express, to enhance their transaction capabilities. Learn more about Ripple in our workshops!

What is DCA?

Start small, and keep it steady.

What is DCA, and how would it have worked for Ripple?

DCA stands for dollar-cost averaging. You buy a fixed amount at regular times, like €25 every week, whatever the price is. When the price is low the same money buys more, and when it's high it buys less, so you don't have to guess the right moment.

  • Why people use itIt takes out the guesswork, and small regular amounts are easier to keep up.
  • What it can't doIt doesn't guarantee a profit. If the price keeps falling, you can still lose money.
  • Set it and let it runA recurring buy in the app repeats on its own. Check in now and then, and change the amount if your plans change.

A quick example

€100 a month for 3 months, with made-up prices

MonthYou put inPriceYou get (BTC)
January€100€50,0000.00200
February€100€40,0000.00250
March€100€60,0000.00167
Total€3000.00617

Same €100 each month: the lower the price, the more XRP you get.

Your average price: €48,649

That's lower than the €50,000 average of the three prices, because the same €100 bought more when the price was low.

Is XRP safe?

The risk people usually mean is price: XRP can move sharply in a single day. How XRP is run also matters, so read what it is above. Only put in what you'd be comfortable losing while you learn.

Is XRP a good investment for beginners?

No one can promise that — XRP's price can rise or fall sharply, and past performance is never a guarantee. What you can control is how you invest: many beginners buy a small amount on a regular schedule (called dollar-cost averaging) instead of trying to time the market, and only invest what they can afford to lose. Treat XRP as a long-term way to learn, not a get-rich-quick bet.

Can I buy a small amount?

Yes. You don't need to buy a whole XRP. Coins are divisible to many decimal places, so you can buy a small part of one.

Where is my XRP stored?

When you buy through Rumos, your XRP is kept with our regulated custody partner BitGo, in segregated accounts. You manage it in the Rumos app.

What can I actually do with it?

Hold it, swap it for other coins in the app, or set up a weekly recurring buy. Sending to an outside wallet isn't available yet.
